PATHOLOGY MUSEUM

The Pathology Department at AAU is the country’s oldest and first public institution to offer diagnostic pathology services to hospitals around the nation, conduct research to solve regional issues and give training to medical students. It gives anatomic pathology training both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and provides lectures for other health science programs. The Department receives and performs over 9000 patient biopsies per year for evaluation in the surgical pathology division, 4000 fine needle aspirations and body fluids for cytologic evaluations and over 2000 cases for hematological diagnosis, in the near future the department is planning to double these numbers, as the number of staff pathologists has now increased to 17. In addition, up to 100 neonatal autopsies are done annually.




The department of Pathology Plays a critical role in realizing the strategic plan of the Addis Ababa University by enhancing Undergraduate and Post graduate Medical education for tomorrow’s leaders, providing highest quality unparalleled diagnostic Pathology services for all hospitals all over the country and promoting research activities that addresses the national problems.


The museum is to be open to university community, medical or non-medical students, staff, and to the public outside the university. It is intended to be used to demonstrate disease conditions to the public and raise awareness on specific risk factors. It will be open to middle and high school students who are interested to join the medical field. It will help the department raise awareness on the value of pathology diagnostic services.
